why read books?

People have asked me for many years why I read so much, and I have given a variety of answers, in cluding 'I enjoy it', 'its relaxing and enagaging' or 'its an adventurous escape' and more. Recently I came across a quote that answered better and far more eloquently than I ever could.

Al-Jahiz (born in Basra, 781) said:

"The book is silent as long as you need silence, eloquent whenever you need discourse. He never interrupts you if you are engaged, but if you feel lonely he will be a good companion. He is a friend that never decieves or flatters you, and he is a companion who does not grow tired of you."
