Something small

Sometimes it is only something small that makes u proud, something u may not really notice or something that u take for granted.

The other day I was walking through the misty rain that only Manchester seems to produce in abundance, on my way home from work and I heard an ambulance approaching. The "nee naw nee naw" piercing and loud in the dull wetness of the afternoon. And as usual the people in their cars veered to the sides of the road, or drove out the way or parked up to get out the ambulance's way so that its progress was fast and uninterrupted.

The sight touched me deeply - now I know, thank God, that this generosity is part of every day life for most of us here; its an amazing courtesy that everyone has unconsciously agreed to.But so necessary. Cos we all know that one day that ambulance may be rushing to save us or some we know or love - so we get out the way everytime, just like we'd like others to do.

Its a such a beautiful concept and such an Islamic one - treat others as you would have them treat you. Give more than you take. Be generous and charitable.

I know its a small thing but what it translates into something is so much bigger - because this one small act had pervaded all of society - cos we all get out the way. Subahnallah.

Now if we could only translate this attitude, the generosity, this kindness into other aspects of out society...if only. Gun crime, knife crime, rape.... none of it would be a problem - because people would automatically refrain from hurting someones mother, brother, sister or father.

If only...
